KALEIDOSCOPE (coming October 2024)
“KALEIDOSCOPE” ARTIST STATEMENT
Kaleidoscope is an exibit presented by Sandrine Colson and Kristen Freitas. Kaleidoscopes visualize continuously changing patterns of shapes and colors. In our continuously shifting or rapidly changing world, kaleidoscopes represent the unknown, change and choices we could make toward a specific path. In some ways they represent paths between reality and non-reality, how we view things in multiple ways or dimensions, making connections through our reality, dreams and how everything intermixes. They are windows toward new possibilities, openings towards new real or unreal universes that our mind constructs. They are opportunities for change. This exhibit addresses the artists' interpretation of what kaleidoscopes mean for them.
The word Kaleidoscope can be broken down into its Ancient Greek roots (kalos), "beautiful, beauty", (eidos), "that which is seen: form, shape" and (skopeō), "to look to, to examine.” Taken together, it means "observation of beautiful forms.”
Most have played with a kaleidoscope toy, a tube consisting of mirrors and pieces of colored glass or paper, whose reflections rearrange in beautiful colorful changing patterns as the object is rotated and the viewer watches through the eyehole. It is a continually changing pattern of shapes and colors.
Sandrine Colson sees herself as a storyteller. She works abstractly, using bold marks and intricate shapes, often referencing natural forms. Her work is filled with paint swirls, playful paper cut-outs, and three-dimensional objects, resulting in richly textured canvases with intricate layers and meanings. She is a painter of stories, some told through her brush, some for the viewer to find.
